Miner to brief landholders about contamination clean-up

Comment: Modern mining does not work!

The company rehabilitating and monitoring a gold mine in north Queensland will meet landholders today to discuss the ongoing process.

In 2008, heavy rain caused water contaminated with heavy metals to flow from the Mount Leyshon Mine at Charters Towers onto a neighbouring property.

Newmont is the company in charge of monitoring the site and its rehabilitation.

Spokesman Brian Watt says representatives will meet stakeholders today, including two of the three property owners whose pastoral holdings cover the mine tenant.

The third landholder recently raised concerns about contamination to his cattle property and says problems are ongoing.
