WORLD EXPERTS ON URANIUM MINING TO APPEAR AT RICHMOND FORUM NEXT THURSDAY, MARCH 11

Press conference in Hampton Roads to follow on Friday, March 12

Richmond – Five experts from around the world will be in Richmond on March 11 to discuss the human, environmental and economic impacts of uranium mining during an all-day symposium.

These scientists and experts have witnessed firsthand the operations and impacts of uranium mines in the U.S. and around the globe, and have written extensively on issues of water quality, health consequences, economic impacts, and alternatives. The event is free and open to members of the media and the public.

WHEN: Thursday, March 11. Registration and breakfast at 9:30 a.m.
Presentations 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Reception will follow.

Note: This conference will not focus on the pros and cons of nuclear energy.

The symposium comes at a time when the National Academy of Sciences is about to begin an 18-month study – as requested by the General Assembly - to determine whether uranium mining and milling can be done safely in Virginia. The purpose of this symposium is to help citizens further understand the many and complex issues at hand.

The symposium is sponsored by: Dan River Basin Association, Friends of the Earth, Piedmont Environmental Council, Sierra Club, Virginia Chapter, Southern Environmental Law Center, Virginia Conservation Network, and Virginia Interfaith Power & Light.

Will discuss threat of proposed mine to Virginia drinking water supply

Hampton Roads - The experts will be in the Hampton Roads area the next day for a press conference to talk more specifically about the threat from the proposed Virginia Uranium Inc. mine in Pittsylvania County to the drinking water supply for downstream communities, including Virginia Beach.
